Nebraska is perhaps most known for its major farming and ranching industries. The state is located in the Midwestern United States, part of the Great Plains that stretch from the Canadian border down to Texas.
Much of Nebraska is prairie land that remains barren and is used extensively for the state's massive agriculture industry. However, there are urban areas that are widely populated, including the Omaha and Lincoln metropolitan areas.
Major Nebraska Cities
Omaha -- Omaha is the largest city in Nebraska, with a population just over 390,000. The city is located on the eastern border of the state, directly across the Platte River from Council Bluffs, Iowa. The two cities are commonly known as the Omaha-Council Bluffs metropolitan area, which has a combined population of more than 1.2 million people in a 60 mile radius. The city is nicknamed "Gateway to the West" because of its location and its history as a transportation hub back in the late 1800s.
Lincoln -- Lincoln is the capital of Nebraska and was named after President Abraham Lincoln. The city has a population just under 242,000 and was founded in 1856. The University of Nebraska is located in Lincoln and the city's economy is derives mostly from service industries.
Nebraska Industries
- Agriculture is by far the state's largest and most profitable industry, bringing in billions of dollars every year. The largest agricultural products produced in Nebraska include beef, pork, and corn.
- Transportation, primarily railroads and trucks, is another major industry in the state. The world's largest rail yard (Bailey Yard, owned by Union Pacific) is located in the town of North Platte and many companies have distribution centers in Nebraska since the state is a transportation hub due to its central location.
