Does the state of Nebraska have any physical requirements for truck drivers?
Truck drivers in every state are required to meet the physical requirements that are mandated by the U.S. Department of Transportation.  These standards are set to ensure that truck drivers do not have any pre-existing medical conditions that might hinder their ability to safely operate and driver a commercial motor vehicle.  If you are applying for a Nebraska CDL, you will be required to have a physical exam completed by your physician and obtain a Department of Transportation medical certificate.  In the state of Nebraska, you are required to have the medical certificate with you at all times while driving.

What does the driving skills portion of the CDL exam entail?
The purpose of the test is so you can demonstrate your ability to operate a commercial truck in a safe and proper manner.  You will have to show the instructor that you can properly inspect the vehicle before driving, how to couple and uncouple tractors and trailers, and how to operate the vehicle in certain driving conditions (such as snow or wet roads).

How long is a Nebraska CDL valid for?
A Nebraska CDL will remain valid for five years; you will then be required to renew it.  The state will mail a renewal reminder 90 days (3 months) prior to your CDL expiration date.  You must renew your CDL as soon as possible since it is against the law to operate a commercial truck without a valid CDL in your possession.

How do I replace my lost Nebraska CDL?
Replacing your CDL is not difficult but it must be done right away.  You must provide proof of your name, birth date, and social security number to your nearest county official.  Photocopies or faxes of such documents will not be accepted; they must be originals.  There is a fee of $11.25 to obtain a duplicate CDL.  You will not be required to re-test any portion of the CDL exam.

Do I need more than one CDL?
If you are over 21, your Nebraska CDL allows you to legally drive a commercial vehicle in any state. It is against the law to have more than one commercial driver license. In fact, you can be fined up to $5,000 for having more than one license.

The Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles uses a centralized computer system to share information about CDL drivers with other states. In addition to ensuring that no driver is licensed in more than one state, this system also helps the Nebraska DMV monitor driver accident records.
